Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1541-1614) was a great artist who cannot be pinned down easily. He came from a Greek icon-painting culture, studied with Titian in Venice, and finally settled in Toledo, Spain. Famous for his otherworldly depictions of religious themes, El Greco (the Greek, his nickname in Spain) was also a trenchantly realistic portrait painter. His dramatic and expressionistic style found much appreciation in the 19th and 20th century.
